Let’s just say that I had to ask Michelle what a set and rep was during our first assessment meeting.
Before that you could say that I was an expert couch potato and a fast food connoisseur.
A few years ago, I did a couch to 5K program and ran in two 5K races, but once I went back to work after my maternity leave, the running basically stopped. Before that I had a Goodlife membership and went about three times in the 5-years that I had the membership. The Goodlife was in the building my office was in, so it couldn’t have been more convenient.
I was at a point in my life where I needed to find something that would get me active, that would get me in shape, and allow me to be a good role model for my kids.
After Bryn joined LP, he strongly encouraged me to give it a try. I thought he was nuts because he discovered LP after driving up Victoria Street one day and seeing a bunch of crazy people flipping tires.
When he started he talked about the Olympic lifts he would do and all the fun circuits. I didn’t think it was for me, I felt I would look like such an uncoordinated newbie, but when LP started their 101 program, I decided to give it a try. After the 101 program I was hooked.
I love being surrounded by likeminded people, who are there to push you and celebrate your successes. I don’t feel like I’m being judged when I go or when I am there working out.
We all work at our own pace/skill level and we all feel the same exhaustion at the end of the workout. Even when I don’t feel all that motivated to workout, there is always someone there with a huge smile on their face saying “you got this!”
They are there to make sure that our technique is right so we avoid injury. And they have a knack for knowing when I’m capable of more than what I thought was possible and adding that additional resistance. They also care about all the members and take the time to modify things and to give encouragement during a workout and even off hours.
I remember when I first started, I would force Bryn to take a picture of the board so I could mentally prepare for class…and sometimes try to find a good excuse not to go (I was never able to come up with one), but after every workout I’m filled with so much pride that I made it through. Something that I thought wasn’t possible, was possible and that’s a great feeling to have.
Before LP I thought I knew how to eat healthy – fruits, vegetable, protein etc. but once I started following the meal plan from the Body Fat Challenge, I quickly learned that I was eating 2-3 times the proper portion size and usually a lot more fats and unhealthy carbs.
I remember the first time I accurately portioned my dinner and realized that it was the same serving size as what I was giving my kids. Being able to work closely with Michelle and being accountable to her and the 7:30 girls kept me on track. I’ve also been able to find the balance between a healthy nutrition and indulging in my favorite foods.
At the beginning I would think about how can I get out of this workout, ask Bryn, I was the Queen of excuses. The kids need me, I’m really tired, I have work to do, the list went on and on. But now I make sure I go to class and I put everything I have into that hour. If I can’t make class because I’m traveling for work than I make sure I bring the LP “Anywhere & Anytime” workouts and make sure I do at least one of them while away.
With working full-time and having a 5 and 3 year old, it would be easy to make excuses to say that we can’t workout but he wakes up every day to go to the 6 am class so that I can go to the 7:30 class, which means he deals with bedtime. He’s also my biggest fan and competitor. He reminds me every day how proud of me he is and encourages me to push beyond my limits <3
Bryn has always been active and it was probably a big struggle for him to live with an inactive wife. We now enjoy getting out and doing things more so then we have in the past.
After Bryn and I started at LP, we quickly saw the positive impact it had on our children. They love joining us whenever they could, watching and mimicking us. Now with the Kid Friendly Classes, they are loving that they can participate and do superman holds, v-sits, plate rows along with us. I love that they are a part of the LP Family, can be comfortable in this environment and can be surrounded by strong people.
Lastly, although Bryn and I don’t get to train together, we do the same workout everyday so it’s always nice to be able to talk something we have in common and we really enjoy the occasions when we can workout together and push each other.
When Lyna started she didn’t know what a Clean & Jerk or Snatch were. She was a newbie in the fitness world but she has been focused every since. The numbers on the bar are just as important to Lyna as the number on the scale and that has been a big part of her success.
With her improved diet and intense workouts, Lyna has burned off 14% Body Fat, which has equated to 22lbs of Body Fat gone and muscle gained, while losing a total of 17lbs.
Starting – 132lbs – 32%
Current – 115lbs – 18%
